La Maison du Roi (Grand Place)

| History |
Originally built as a granary. Charles Quint renovated the building
between 1516 and 1532, changing it from a granary to a house for the
aristocracy. Hence the name “Maison du Roi” (the King’s
house). The building was re-built in the 19th century, according to
plans from the 15th century. Today it houses the “Musée
de la ville de Bruxelles”, the Brussels citymuseum. (See also

Le Manneken Pis |

sculpture in 1619 to decorate a fountain.. |

There are several legends about the significance of the Manneken
Pis’ gesture. According to one of them he put out the burning
fuse of a bomb that was supposed to blow up the town hall. That way
he is believed to have prevented a blaze. The Manneken Pis is the
mascot of the people of Brussels, a symbol for their warrior spirit
and the best-known image of Brussels around the world. The Manneken
Pis’ wardrobe, some of it on display, is kept in the “Maison
du Roi” |

The Grand-place |
| History |
The market square was the heart of the old town since the 13th century.
It was the site of the farmers’ market until 1969. The town
hall has been on the Grand Place since the 15th century. The Grand
Place was bombed in 1695 by Louis XIV and re-built according to plans
dating back to the 17th century. |
